Detroit City Debut
Avid supporter groups, bass drums, and families across the metro-Detroit area came out to Cass Tech High School to watch the newly founded Detroit City FC soccer club play to a 1-1 tie with AFC Cleveland Saturday in their first-ever NPSL match.
Detroit City started the game strong, controlling the majority of possession through the first half and taking a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute, with a goal from Stefan St. Louis off a stellar cross from forward Tom Oatley. Cleveland equalized in the 35th minute, putting a long ball got behind the City defense for Division III All-American forward Vinny Bell, who neatly shot one into the back of the net.
The following evening, Detroit City made its first road trip, to take on FC Buffalo. The two teams played to a 0 – 0 tie.
A stoppage time goal by English defender Ruairidh Winters gave AFC Cleveland a 2-2 draw with Greater Binghamton FC (0-0-1) in their first-ever home match. ..The San Diego Flash (5 - 1 - 0) reeled off another impressive win, 3-0 win over the Bay Area Ambassadors. Midfield dynamo Andy Ortega, who went on to take man of the match honors, forced the first goal of the game on 17 minutes when his squaring ball in the area rebounded into the net off an attempted clearance from the Ambassadors keeper. Five minutes into the second half Brennan Tennelle tucked home the ball to make it 2-0 and after 80 minutes the result was put beyond doubt with a third goal from David Bakal with his second in two games.
NPSL Player of the Week
AFC Cleveland defender Ruairidh Winters has been selected as the National Premier Soccer League Player of the Week for the Week ending May 13.
In addition to turning in a solid performance at center back, Winters came through with a stoppage-time goal to lift AFC Cleveland into a 2-2 draw with Greater Binghamton FC in their home opener on Sunday.
